Hi, I am Archana and I am so glad you are here!

Better In Health (BIH) is my effort to bring to you research-based, reliable information that you can use in your everyday life to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and kidney disease.

Here, you will find delicious and healthy recipes along with an explanation of what makes them good for your condition. Apart from recipes, you will also find helpful tips and tricks, researched references, and support to carry on with your journey.

My background

I have a master’s degree in software engineering and have worked as a software developer for over a decade. My background and my work experience have trained me to be an analytical thinker with a focus on problem solving.

However, it is human behavior that piques my interest. I pursued this interest and earned a doctorate degree in Human Development. During my years as a doctoral student, I honed my skills as a researcher and have published numerous articles in highly respected journals.

My inspiration and ‘why’

I ventured into the field of health more out of necessity than a desire.

My husband Vivek was diagnosed with pre-diabetes at an age of 28 and within 5 years his pre-diabetes had progressed to type 2 diabetes. During my pregnancy, I was told I had eclampsia, and by the time I was 32, I had developed high blood pressure. Such early detection of our chronic conditions worried me a lot as both of us also have a family history of these conditions.

Being diagnosed with a chronic condition can be nerve-wrecking. I felt anxious as guidance from doctors was minimal and it was hard to find reliable information elsewhere. I consulted dietitians but the cost was prohibitive and found the guidance inadequate.

As I talked to others with these chronic conditions, I found that I wasn’t alone in feeling this way. Just like me, most folks were worried and had no idea how to deal with their conditions on a daily basis.

That was when I decided to do my own research. I read a lot of books and took various certificate courses from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Temple University, and the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists to learn more about diabetes and high blood pressure.

Here are the certifications that I have done for diabetes and lifestyle management:

  • Diabetes care & education specialist certificate – Advaced
  • CDC’s DPP certified prevent T2 lifestyle coach
  • Diabetes educator level 1
  • UCSF advanced management of diabetes certificate

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, my father-in-law was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (kidney failure). Understanding how much this disease takes from you is difficult unless you have experienced it firsthand.

My father-in-law’s health deteriorated rapidly and he constantly felt tired. Frequent dialysis sessions, blood draws, and diet struggles made him frustrated. We were at our wit’s end trying to find a solution to this problem.

I started looking into kidney disease and came across the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). As I learned more about this disease, it became clear to me that diet is the first and most important thing that can help in the management of kidney disease. So I took various courses and got certifications from the NKF to gain a deeper understanding of how to slow down the progression of kidney disease and live a healthier life on dialysis.

Below are a few certifications that I have completed from National Kidney Foundation:

  • Global renal nutrition course for dietitians: Module 1
  • Global renal nutrition course for dietitians: Module 2
  • Nutrition Assessment
  • Strategies I: Essential of nutrition practice for chronic kidney disease
  • Nutrition in chronic kidney disease guideline update: dietary protein intake
  • CKD labs
  • Treatment of anemia in all stages of CKD

All of this research and using it every day has given me the confidence that I can easily take care of these long-term conditions. I am happy to tell you that with a proper diet, medication, and lifestyle modifications, my family members and I are keeping happy and healthy.

I have been incredibly lucky to have support from Vivek. He is the photographer, recipe taster, and website manager for BIH. He is also the person who convinced me that if I could put all my learning and experiences into a website, we could help others who have similar health conditions as we do.

I hope you enjoy looking around this website and that it helps you find your own way to health and happiness.
